Why is social media marketing important for my small business?

Posted on | May 29, 2011 | 6 Comments

The most important factor in the evolution of marketing is the growing emphasis on two-way customer touch points. Building brand loyalty in this day and age is not just about making sure your message reaches the relevant audience; it’s about making sure you can hear their responses so you can also respond accordingly.

Social media marketing facilitates a conversation between the brand and the customer, thereby engaging the two parties in such a way that loyalty is solidified. This is especially important for small businesses because small businesses have the luxury of focusing on a smaller client base. It’s important for small businesses to be accessible to their customers. Social media is one way of capitalizing on this need to be connected and thus allowing both the brand and the customers to maintain the conversation.

Social media marketing allows your customers to get to know your interests in ways they never would otherwise. It humanizes you and highlights the commonalities shared with others. People want to buy merchandise and do business with people like them in their neighborhoods. In addition, social media is real-time talk. Opinions and news are mentioned as it happens. Business owners need to be where people are talking for the opportunity to add to the conversation and increase their exposure.

I agree with Blairnative – smart phones are a huge and growing market and will propel social media even further. In 2010 smart phones grew 53% and are projected to grow 29% in 2011 and then in the low 20s the following years. I summarised the growth of apps and smart phones in 2010 and beyond in this article if of interest – http://www.lucidica.com/newsletters/201101/smartapps.htm.

However the crux I think is what WebCreations point out – "Social Media is not a fad it is a shift in they way we do business." Every year more power moves over to the consumer and if we don’t adapt our businesses to this fast-moving and savvy platform in time, we’ll be left behind.

Consumers have a greater voice than ever so the old mantra that 1 unhappy customer will tell 10 people will probably be magnified to 100 shortly, as it is so easy to share your opinion with many more people. If you already run your business where you respect your customers, listen to their thoughts, concerns and complaints without the social media platform then you will embrace and excel at social media.

Our CTO wrote a great article outlining our top 6 tips to social media for small business if that helps – http://www.lucidica.com/newsletters/201101/top-tips-for-social-media.htm.
