Chuck raps about link building.

You create a new site and its content heavy,
With the right amount of pictures you believe it’s ready,
So you launch it trying to put money in da bank,
But when you search and try to find yourself, you can’t,
So you thank until your mind goes blank,
Got titles and headers but no page rank,
Sooner or later it will show if I wait,
In the meantime make sure my code validate,

Hmm, now what I’m supposed to do,

Something must be missing,

So you start hunting down sites like a predator,
Doing back links on all your competitors,
Whoever linking to them need to link to me,
Is it free, do we swap, or do I pay a fee,
Well take it from us, before you take that step,
Some things about the site that you might want to check,
Did they use a link farm or some dirty tactics,
Could have a bad effect on your site that’s drastic,
Could’ve link baited, look at what they created,
Compare it to yours, is it even related,
Take the time, go inspect and see,
Take advantage of paid directories,
If you follow all the steps with a little bit of patience,
Get links from relevant sites that are favorites,
Update your content on the regular basis,

As the title says. For example if Nike would link build to Adidas (ignore the reasons why for now), would it be frowned upon in the SEO realm?

It might associate your site with the site you are linking to but the results of this association may be questionable to the value.

Basically, link building is a way of getting "votes" from other authority websites to boost your position in a Google, Yahoo, MSN search for a specific keyword phrase e.g. "Hairdressers in Barcelona", if that was your business.

Google likes it when you have authority links coming to your website and the better quality they are, the more Google trusts your website. The end result is that you move up in the search engine rankings and more people will find you for your keyword phrase.

Obviously this is very oversimplified, but check out the websites below for more info.

I think that the best is build back-links with your keywords in the anchor of the links. Usually you can build them posting in blogs comments but with your niche site it is a little difficult to find blogs that are related to it (they must be related). So I should write articles that link to your site and should send them to sites like ezinearticles.com (it really works).
Second I should build 2 blogs in blogger.com and lenses in squidoo.com with this rules:
Your keywords in the title, and 3 or 4 times in the body of each article in the links to your site. The articles always related to the main theme of your site,
If you can write some good content in your site and then social-bookmark it (digg, mister wong, stumble,…) With you aren’t targeting to get people from this sites to go to your site, but you will have a back-link from a site with a very nice Pagerank so Google will notice this.
Finally, if you aren’t subscribed to webmaster tools and google analytics, subscribe your site and send the sitemap.xml. If you don’t have any, you will have to create one, because is esential for Google to index correctly your site. Have in mind that in the sitemap you can tel Google when do you want google robot to visit you next time, and you can set a frequency for each page.
