Stop working with wankers!
Reality bites, but it’s also hiring.

Every major industry’s saddled with stereotypes: lawyers are heartless, bankers are money-hungry and clowns are downright terrifying. So it’s no surprise the advertising world is just as riddled with clichés and hackneyed typecasting…except of course that with every stereotype comes an element of truth. That’s the thinking behind the cheeky recruitment drive of growing start-up consultancy firm ‘Step Change Marketing’ and their ‘Wankers That Don’t Work Here’ campaign.
“We wanted to attract staff who love the industry but hate the politics, egos and rigid, demarcated roles of the big agencies” explained Step Change’s General Manager, Jeff Cooper. “It’s ridiculous to the point of offensive that only ‘creatives’ are capable of great ideas or that only ‘suits’ know how to talk to clients, so we’re looking for people to do both in the one role; something we’ve called ‘Creative Solutions’.”
And creative solutions is what this video’s all about. Rather than spending tens of thousands of dollars on corporate recruiters and advertising, the team decided to go straight to the source with an amusing piece that deliberately cuts very close to the bone. “The one great thing about wankers is that they need no explanation, so we were able to forego the traditional recruitment channels and approach candidates in a far more direct way. Ours is a pretty simple message: wankers don’t work here, so do you want to?”
It’s a message that’s already paid dividends, since the writer of the film subsequently signed on with the company after being drawn to its flexible and performance-based approach to work. As an added bonus, the money saved on the campaign will instead go into higher salaries for the successful applicants.
So how does Cooper feel about making fun of the industry? “It’s a bit like throwing rocks at a beehive”, he replied. “You might get stung, but there’s honey in there as well.”

If you’re interested in working with an agency that’s young and thinking of things differently download the job description (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6357179/Nowakners/desc.doc ) and then submit your resume to jobs@stepchangemarketing.com

Story Worldwide is a post-advertising agency. In essence, we believe that advertising-as-interruption is over. We connect brands to customers by telling engaging and entertaining stories that audiences actually want to hear.

This film explains our philosophy in 90 seconds.

Too lazy to watch a film? Read the script:

THE FUTURE OF ADVERTISING

This seems obvious, even though it was controversial until recently: Brand is story.

First, you have to find the core story at the heart of your brand —what we call the Story Platform. Create narratives based on it and publish those narratives across all relevant media in weird and wonderful ways.

As each story is published, it needs to be syndicated and shared with it’s intended audience where they are most likely to encounter those stories. Then use paid media —— TV spots, events, paid search and so on — to let people know your content is out there.

The content has to be easy for people to share so everyone can help spread the brand’s stories.
To make sure your audience can find your content when searching, make sure everything is tagged and optimized appropriately.
So it goes, round and round, driving results and effectiveness up, up, up while driving media spend down, down, down.

The best part comes next: Sustained by the brand’s storytelling, the brand’s fans add, syndicate and share their own content —— comments, links, ratings, and entirely new versions —— and all this brand-inspired content —— whether new stories or conversation about old ones —— creates more marketing momentum for free, forever.
The result of rigorously following this path is a permanent market advantage for the brand——lower total cost of marketing; higher impact.
All you need is to make sure you’ve got your story straight.

IT marketing

Search Engine Optimization may not be the right strategy for all websites. Other
strategies could be more helpful, but it all depends on what is the owner’s
goal.  One of these other SEO strategies
is called ATO (Ad Text Optimization) which is a type of paid search
advertising.  Now, a successful SEO
campaign can create organic traffic (a natural relevance to search terms
instead of being an advertisement), but it could also include paid advertising,
creating great quality web pages, setting up a way for owners to gauge their
online success, and improving a website’s conversion rate (which is the ratio
of people who visit a site versus the amount of people who take action). The
problem with SEO is that search engines change their algorithms and there are
no guarantees on continued referrals. Because of this a business that may
require a lot of help from search engine traffic could suffer losses if a
search engine stops sending visitors to their site.  This being the case it is advised to keep
from dependence on search engine traffic.
Most search marketers will share that it is better to receive traffic
from links as they are stronger.

What are some ways to use Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites to spread the word about my business?

Great question! Social Media falls into a larger umbrella called "Inbound Marketing." Traditionally marketing would be 1) cold calls/ telemarketing 2) print marketing such as magazines or newspapers 3) radio advertising 4) TV advertising 5) outdoor advertising. The before mentioned techniques would be labeled as "Outbound Marketing."

50 years ago companies like P&G, McDonald’s, and Pfizer built their brand with these techniques. The problem with outbound marketing today is: consumers have DVRs so they do not watch TV commercials; consumers have iPods so I don’t listen to the radio; consumers subscriptions rates to magazines and newspapers are near extinction; and consumers have learned to ignore "interruption marketing" such as telemarketing through services like caller ID.

Newer companies within the last 10 years such as Google, Facebook, and Amazon have used Inbound Marketing. Using Social Media will give you leverage to compete with bigger brands and with bigger budgets. Here is how:

Create Profiles on Social Media Sites: Although there are many social network sites it is best to get your feet wet on 1) Facebook 2) Twitter and 3) LinkedIn.

Facebook:
Create a Fan Page for your business. Click on this link http://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php and follow the setup instructions.

Twitter:
Create an account by navigating to https://twitter.com/signup. Follow the instructions to setup your account.

LinkedIn:
Create a personal account and a company page. To create a personal account go to https://www.linkedin.com/secure/register?trk=hb_join and enter in the appropriate fields. To create a company page make sure you have your personal account created and verified and then click on this link http://www.linkedin.com/companies?didentcompy=.

What’s Next
In general listen. See what your target audience is talking about, and then after you understand add value by sharing your thoughts. Below are a few specific examples:

Twitter:
You have 140 characters. Be short and link back to more information on your website or blog. By linking back to your website you create traffic and allow your site to be indexed by search engines. Both are good.

Facebook:
Pose questions. Share resources that your target audience would find of value. Think of your Facebook Fan Page like a forum.

LinkedIn:
Answer questions posted by your target audience. This will give you "expertise" which is rewarded with green stars in the category your answer was selected as the best answer. Link your blog to your company page. By adding your blog to your company page your LinkedIn page will share your latest blog post with the professional community.

I hope that helps, and if you have any questions feel free to connect with me on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/adam.root) or LinkedIn (http://www.linkedin.com/in/adammroot).
