…class setting?
I live in NJ and I’d be looking for either an adult education course or perhaps a community college type setting.

Search engine optimization is such a tricky task that I would be surprised if it were taught in a class as more than a tangential offering. That isn’t to say that SEO isn’t important, just that it is in such a constant state of flux and can change dramatically from one search engine to another based on the individual engine’s algorithm. I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a class that spends a bit of time talking about basic SEO techniques and the reason for them, but I’ve never seen an entire class on it.

A little history on the topic and some basics: Back in the early days of the web, search engine results were based almost entire on key words that were embedded within the header of the HTML code (specifically in the <meta> tag). This method worked fairly well, but was unfortunately open to dishonesty. The method was heavily abused by "less than reputable" sites which peppered their meta tags with common search terms in the hopes of drawing more people to their sites.

Eventually search engines developed more and more advanced search algorithms. Currently, most algorithms take into account a vast amount of information about a site before calculating its search rating. Among them are (for most search engines):

contents of the <title> tag contents of header tags <h1> – <h6> page content (with higher priority given to words further up the page) text used for links contents of sites that are linked to from the page contents of sites that link to the page
While there are other aspects that go into SEO, these are a very good start for a beginning (and even many expert) designers as they are easy to accomplish. Beyond that, things get a bit tricky.

…that it is being taught online.

Many people do not know what is SEO or search engine marketing, so the logical place to advertise services for this, would be the internet.

A great idea is to startup a local meeting group in your town and create some discussions on what is search engine optimization and marketing. If small businesses find out that there is a way to utilize marketing methods online, it may open an untapped stream of revenue for the one that shares with this particular community.

I am in the midst of doing just that, but online with my new blog website titled "newbieclassroom.com" .

As I develop the site, SEO probably won’t be the main topic, but only because my audience won’t know what this term means. I’ll probably get them up to speed eventually and possibly offer a service to them using these techniques.
